AWU official John Thornton said the job cuts at the plant amount to a 60 per cent reduction
in production.

"It's a hard call, it's not going to be easy... I don't believe they will get enough
voluntary (redundancies)," he told reporters.

He said the 3200 workers at the plant, who were told about the cuts on Monday morning,
have been left with a great deal of uncertainty.

"They have got to go home and face their families... not knowing if they have got a

NSW: Police appeal after business robbed and attacked

SYDNEY, Feb 19 AAP - Police are seeking the public's help to find two men who viciously
attacked a store owner during the armed robbery of a business in western Sydney last month.

The two men assaulted and threatened the 51-year-old male shop owner with knives about
1.45pm (AEDT) on January 2, police said.

They said the pair jumped the counter and attacked the shop owner, leaving him with
serious facial injuries, including severe bruising and permanent scarring.

His 50-year-old wife, 16-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son witnessed the attack
but were not injured.

Both men were described to police as being of Pacific Islander appearance, with the
first one 18-25 years-old, 175cm-185cm tall, solidly built with tanned skin and black
hair.

He was last seen wearing a dark bandana, an orange Everlast-brand singlet, black Adidas-brand
shorts, white shoes and a silver necklace.

The other man was described as being about 20-25 years old and 185-190cm tall, of solid build.

His clothing when last seen was a dark green hat, black sunglasses, black singlet,
dark denim shorts, white shoes and socks.

Fairfield Local Area Commander Superintendent Ray King said investigators wanted the
matter cleared up quickly.

"No family should ever have to witness what these people have seen," Supt King said.

"I am appealing to the community to help us find these two men so we can find out what
they know."

Anyone with information about the men's whereabouts should contact Crime Stoppers on

INTERNET BUSINESS NEWS-(C)1995-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS

26 April 2011 - TA Associates and Summit Partners are together investing USD350m (EUR241m) in Bigpoint in a deal that will give them a controlling stake in the German Internet gaming group, the Financial Times reported.
The two companies are buying the stake from Comcast Interactive Capital, GMT and General Electric.

GMT and General Electric, which enjoyed five-fold growth in their investment, made two years ago, will remain minority stakeholders, while Bigpoint's founder and co-head, Heiko Hubertz, will keep his 30% holding.

The deal values Bigpoint at over USD600m and does not involve the raising of new funding. Hubertz, however, hopes that TA and Summit would help the company expand globally, acquire businesses and create software.

Bigpoint is one of the biggest companies in its sector, with its registered customers exceeding 185m.

It was advised by Montgomery & Co, while TA and Summit were consulted by Noah Advisors.

VIC:Round table to boost Vic families

MELBOURNE, Feb 10 AAP - The Victorian government is to establish a forum to advance
the needs and wellbeing of families.

A statement tabled in parliament on Thursday says families are at the centre of the
coalition's decision-making.

It acknowledges and celebrates "the extraordinary strength and essential role of traditional
families".

But it also recognises that Victorian households come in different forms than the nuclear family.

"The definitions are less important than the recognition that families are the building
blocks of our society," the statement said.

The round table will bring together relevant ministers, community groups, non-government
organisations, business and church leaders to discuss critical family issues, lead community
discussion and chart future changes.

The government will also seek input from the public.

The ministerial families statement will be updated annually to provide an "objective
snapshot" of the quality of life of Victorian families.

WA:Rail disruption in Perth

PERTH, Aug 27 AAP - Many rail commuters in Perth are having a slow trip to work after
dozens of train drivers called in sick at short notice amid wage negotiations.

Up to 40 drivers called in sick on Thursday night or Friday morning, causing train
services on the northern and southern lines into the city to be limited to two an hour,
instead of one every four minutes.

Transperth warned commuters to expect lengthy delays on Friday.

It's understood drivers are unhappy with negotiations over their Enterprise Bargaining Agreement.

Transperth said the disruption could also affect transport to Friday night's AFL match
between Fremantle and Carlton at Subiaco Oval.

Qld: Patel patient knew of operation risks, court hears

By David Barbeler

BRISBANE, April 20 AAP - A patient who died after being operated on by Dr Jayant Patel
was fully aware of the risk of death but knew the procedure was the best option to save
his life, a court has heard.

The Queensland Supreme Court has heard that James Edward Phillips, 46, died because
his long-standing kidney problems were not treated effectively following an oesophagectomy
by Patel at the Bundaberg Base Hospital in May 2003.

The court heard that due to a lack of ultrasound equipment at the hospital, Patel had
to fly "blind" to insert a central venous line (CVL).

Anaesthetist Dr Alison McCready told the court that the jugular vein was cut, which
resulted in the patient losing blood and requiring four bags of intravenous fluids.

As a result, the CVL could not be inserted to measure body fluids.

The court heard that when red blood cells are stored in bags for a period of time,
they change and may have a higher potassium level.

"We always have to bear it in mind, but there didn't seem to be an alternative to replace
red blood cells that he had lost," Dr McCready said.

As Mr Phillips was suffering from kidney failure, the court heard he was unable to
process the built-up potassium, which could not be measured properly due to the lack of
a CVL.

The build-up of potassium led eventually to Mr Phillips suffering a fatal heart attack.

During cross-examination, Patel's defence barrister Michael Byrne QC asked Dr McCready
if Mr Phillips had wanted the operation, knowing it was his best chance for a cure and
that he had accepted the risk of death.

"I recall that being my understanding at the time and that those things were mentioned
on the consent form, including risk of death," Dr McCready replied.

Earlier, Dr McCready told the court that she had taken over from anaesthetist Dr Martin
Carter during the operation because Dr Carter had to leave.

Patel, 60, is accused of causing the deaths of three Queensland patients - including
Mr Phillips - and permanently injuring another when he performed operations as director
of surgery at the Bundaberg Base Hospital between 2003 and 2005.

Patel has pleaded not guilty to three counts of manslaughter and one of grievous bodily harm.

The trial continues.

Fed: Wong, Obama talk climate change

By Cathy Alexander

CANBERRA, April 28 AAP - Climate Change Minister Penny Wong has raised the importance
of cleaning up the coal industry in talks with US President Barack Obama.

Senator Wong is in Washington for a meeting of the world's major economies, convened
to talk about climate change and energy.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told participants the US was "ready to lead"

on climate change.

In a statement on Tuesday, Senator Wong said the meeting concentrated on technologies
which could cut greenhouse gas emissions.

"Australia outlined the importance of carbon capture and storage in reducing emissions
globally - and the work of the Australian-led Global CCS Institute in driving this," Senator
Wong said.

Meanwhile, Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change Greg Combet, who remained in
Australia, defended the government's emissions trading scheme (ETS) in the face of criticism
from business.

On Tuesday, Woodside Energy warned the scheme would threaten the creation of thousands
of jobs in the liquefied natural gas sector.

Electricity company ERM Power said the ETS would repel investment in new power stations,
stopping them from being built.

Mr Combet said some of the comments from business were "a bit overblown".

"I think some of the commentary can get a bit exaggerated," he told AAP.

"There's a bit of argy-bargy going on, particularly from the resources sector, trying
to ensure that they get the best level of assistance they can."

Mr Combet said some companies would get 90 per cent of their ETS permits for free,
which he said was "very substantial" assistance.

Vic: Rave GHB drama prompts renewed focus on dodgy drugs

AAP General News (Australia)
12-24-2008
Vic: Rave GHB drama prompts renewed focus on dodgy drugs

By Simon Mossman

MELBOURNE, Dec 24 AAP - They've had a great evening so far and the two young women
wait excitedly at the booth inside the rave venue.

There's just one thing they need to do before hitting the dance floor for another all-nighter.

Despite heavy security, the pair has managed to get into the venue each carrying a
vial or two of the liquid party drug GHB; just two of the dozens of revellers here tonight
with the same thing in mind.

Now to have the substance checked by volunteers staffing the drug-testing booth to
make sure their score is kosher.

Legal pill- or drug-testing is one scenario already mooted as a potential 'harm minimisation'
solution and one that, if approved by legislative authorities, could well have helped
the 30-plus ravers taken ill - some seriously - after downing a suspected bad batch of
the drug at a rave party in Melbourne the weekend before Christmas.

Paramedics arrived at Festival Hall in West Melbourne to find the revellers, aged in
their late teens to early 20s, in various states, some having experienced fits and breathing
problems after collapsing.

In small doses, the effects of GHB/GBH - also known as grievous bodily harm, Fantasy
or liquid ecstasy, or gamma-hydroxybutyrate to give it its proper chemical name - can
include a sense of well-being and relaxation but in larger amounts or if mixed with different
substances such as other depressants or alcohol, the effects can be potentially deadly.

"We're talking about an industrial chemical," says Damon Brogan, executive officer
of drug information and education group Vivaids.

"GHB is a tricky substance, it's an odourless liquid and how much you can take depends
on your body mass.

"If you start mixing it with alcohol, then it becomes a whole lot more dangerous.

"Either someone got the batch dosage wrong or it is the case that those affected had
mixed it with alcohol."

Straight away, ambulance authorities suspected the Festival Hall ravers had been sold
a bad batch and warned it could be only a matter of time before someone else died after
ingesting GHB.

Belinda Davey, a 21-year-old nurse, became Victoria's first GHB fatality in July 2005,
dying in a drug dealer's car outside a nightclub.

Mr Brogan said the incidences of GHB use had appeared to be declining in recent years
before Saturday night's incident.

"Ambulance statistics had been improving, meaning there were fewer and fewer attendances
at GHB-related incidents," he says.

"This was a strange and unexpected event for what was a fairly small crowd."

Unsurprisingly, providing drug-testing facilities is not likely to gain any currency
with governments who'd otherwise fear being seen to condone illegal drug-taking.

Sam Biondo, of the Victorian Alcohol and Drug Association (VAADA), said it would be
"an heroic and courageous move" for government authorities to go down such a road.

"Given that people will continue to use it and given the continued black market, if
you want to look at harm minimisation then we need to look at the mechanisms involved
to prevent deaths and injuries occurring," Mr Biondo says.

"Of course it is politically unpalatable for governments to make that decision but
as unpalatable as it is, maybe there needs to be some consideration of pill-testing so
people know what they are taking."

Other experts say such a solution is just as loaded with other problems, adding it
cannot be compared with measures such as controlled heroin injecting rooms.

"With pill and drug testing, they can only test for particular substances - we can
never be quite sure of exactly what substances are in any given drug," explains Geoff
Munro, policy manager at the Australian Drug Foundation.

"There's also an issue of legal liability. If a person has a pill tested and finds
the substance they thought it would contain and they take it and have a bad reaction,
then that puts the pill-tester in a very difficult position.

"With heroin-injecting rooms, it's a different scenario where the drug is taken under
medical supervision and people injecting that drug know exactly what they are injecting
and the outcomes are predictable.

"It's quite different when it comes to having thousands of people at a dance party.

I don't think the two issues are comparable."

As for more practical solutions, the Australian Drug Foundation and Vivaids say the
best approach to harm minimisation is, as always, continuing to educate the community
about drug use.

Furthermore, banning or shutting down events like dance parties would only drive the
problem underground and make it substantially more difficult to deal with, adds Vivaids'
Damon Brogan.

"It's not achievable that we are ever going to stop drug problems, but we can minimise
them," he says.

Then there is the basic issue that drug-taking is still illegal.

Mr Brogan said that had it not been for people too scared to call for an ambulance
in time to help Belinda Davey, ultimately because of fears of police involvement, the
outcome could well have been different.

"If people are too scared to call an ambulance, then someone will die," he warns.

"If people see their friends in trouble, then they need to get help and should not
worry about the police because ... if someone dies, it's then they should be worrying
about the police."

For their part, police chiefs say they will continue to take a hardline approach to
drugs, also promising tougher restrictions on organised events, including the upcoming
dance parties Sensation and Summadayze in Melbourne on new year's eve and new year's day.

"History tells us that these sorts of activities has the presence of drugs," says Victoria
Police Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe.

"My advice to those who are out to enjoy themselves is ... if they are going to use
drugs or possess drugs or traffick drugs we will be there and we will endeavour to catch
them."

AAP General News (Australia)

Vic: Complacency was systematic at CSIRO lab: coroner

By Mariza O'Keefe

MELBOURNE, April 23 AAP - Complacency had become systematic at a Victorian CSIRO laboratory
where a technician died when one of its chambers filled with leaking nitrogen, a coroner
has found.

Scientist Set Van Nguyen, 44, had worked at the CSIRO's Australian Animal Health Laboratories
(AAHL), in Geelong, for 13 years before his tragic death in 2001.

The father of two was found dead in the laboratory early on December 11 after his wife
arrived and told a staff member he had not come home the night before.

Mr Nguyen died from lack of oxygen as he tried to enter an oxygen depleted area of
the AAHL about 4pm the day before, Coroner Audrey Jamieson found.

Her finding follows the inquest held into his death in June last year.

Mr Nguyen died in an air-lock chamber which led into a liquid nitrogen room, which
was not safe to enter as it was filled with nitrogen gas and significantly oxygen depleted,
the coroner found.

The inquest heard an air handling problem had been detected a few days before Mr Nguyen's
death and a post-it note and two other signs were placed on doors leading into the liquid
nitrogen room warning of the danger.

Ms Jamieson said the death of Mr Nguyen - who had a reputation as a conscientious,
diligent and careful worker - was preventable and it was evident complacency had become
systematic at his workplace.

"Sat Van Nguyen's behaviour on that day can only be attributed to a level of complacency,"

she said.

"It is otherwise inexplicable.

"But Set Van Nguyen does not stand alone, there is evidence that complacency had become
systematic in this workplace."

Victorian Workcover Authority inspector, James Chasser, told the inquest several factors
contributed to Mr Nguyen's death, including human error and equipment failure.

He said staff should have been prevented from entering the liquid nitrogen room once
a low oxygen alarm had been activated.

The inquest also heard no one knew that Mr Nguyen was still in the building until they
were alerted the next day by his wife.

In a statement, CSIRO chief executive Dr Geoff Garrett said the organisation deeply
regretted Mr Nguyen's death and expressed its condolences to his family.

He said it would be examining the coroner's findings in detail and it had already implemented
several recommendations about the operations at AAHL.

"We have learnt several important lessons from this tragedy so that a similar event
shouldn't ever happen again," he said.

In her finding, Ms Jamieson said CSIRO conducted its own investigation and "expeditiously"

initiated a number of safety improvements.

She also recommended the introduction of additional closed circuit television monitoring
and distress buttons within airlock and liquid nitrogen rooms.

Fed: Keelty pleased with Canberra bushfire report

CANBERRA, Dec 22 AAP - The damning findings of Coroner Maria Doogan's report into the
2003 Canberra firestorm hold important lessons for future disasters, Australian Federal
Police (AFP) Commissioner Mick Keelty says.

Mrs Doogan found the ACT government and then Emergency Services Bureau knew a firestorm
was coming and "did nothing" to warn the community.

The fire eventually killed four people and destroyed almost 500 homes.

"I think the report gives us a lot to think about and reflect on, I think it's pleasing
that she has got to the issues that a coroner needs to get to," Mr Keelty told ABC Radio.

Mrs Doogan has been criticised by ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope who said this week
the report was not objective.

Mr Stanhope had earlier sought to have Mrs Doogan dismissed from the hearing.

"There's an important lesson here for everybody," Mr Keelty said.

"This is a legal process and a proper process of the coroner taking quite a bit of
evidence and going into considerable forensic detail to get to the heart of the matter
and I think she has."

One of Mrs Doogan's recommendations is for the AFP and Canberra's emergency services
groups to devise better methods of communication.

Mr Keelty said he and ACT Chief Police Officer Audrey Fagan had discussed the recommendations.

"Importantly, putting aside all the politics of it, importantly what we need to do
is ensure we never ever face something like that again."

Tas: Howard to visit coveted marginal seat

HOBART, Aug 15 AAP - In a sign the next federal election is looming, Prime Minister
John Howard will visit two seats Labor has identified as critical to the outcome of the
poll.

Mr Howard will spend two days in Tasmania later this month visiting Hobart and the
seat of Braddon, in the state's north-west.

Earlier this month, opposition leader Kim Beazley named Braddon and the adjacent marginal
seat of Bass as two of Labor's "must win" seats to claim the election.

Labor lost both seats at the 2004 election, largely in response to its forestry policy.

Indeed, Mr Beazley said, Labor must "reclaim the Tasmanian grand slam" of all five
seats in the state if it is to win the election, due next year.

Mr Howard visited Bass last month, the third time he has toured the electorate since
the last election. His visit to Braddon, where he will attend a lunch and an afternoon
tea, will be his second since 2004.

Mr Beazley's five visits to Tasmania since returning to the Labor leadership in January
last year include one to Braddon and none to Bass.

Bass MP Michael Ferguson and Braddon MP Mark Baker hold their seats by tiny margins,
the latter by just 1.1 per cent.

A spokesman for Mr Beazley said today the Labor leader would make "multiple visits"

to Bass and Braddon in the leadup to the election.

The electorates were "crucial to Labor's fortunes" at the next election, the spokesman said.

Mr Howard will spend most of the day in Braddon on August 25, attending an invitation-only
business luncheon in Devonport and a community afternoon tea in Ulverstone.

Then he'll fly to Hobart, where the next day he will address the Tasmanian Liberal
Party state council.

The Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Kevin Andrews, also will speak
at a luncheon in Hobart on August 26.

Fed: Howard and Costello renew tax attack on states

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD and Treasurer PETER COSTELLO have launched a combined attack
on the states for refusing to cut indirect taxes as agreed under the GST deal.

Both leaders used their addresses to the Liberal Party's state conference in Melbourne
to berate the state Labor governments for reneging on the agreement and retaining the
taxes.

Mr HOWARD says says the states are rolling in money.

He says Victoria will get $3.2 billion in GST revenue over the next five years, meaning
the state is $3.2 billion better off than it would have been under previous revenue sharing
arrangements with Canberra.

A national treasurers' meeting earlier this month ended in rancour, with the states
saying they had never agreed to cut the business taxes completely.

The states say the taxes are subject to review and they want the federal government
to resume competition payments.

ETRIEVE LAUNCHES WIRELESS VOICE E-MAIL SERVICE.

etrieve, www.etrieve.com, has launched its flagship etrieve M3 (mobile message management) service and became the first company to announce a funding partnership with Ignition Corporation. etrieve's unique service allows professionals on the move to listen to and respond to their e-mail -- including attachments -- anywhere, anytime, by simply using their wireless phone. All of this is done in a way that is seamless, synchronized and secure with the office environment. No new device and no complex setup is required. Ignition Corporation, the recently formed wireless Internet holding company, led by former senior Microsoft and McCaw executives who helped revolutionize the Internet, personal computing, and wireless technologies, will serve as the lead investor. Joined by Softbank Venture Capital, Madrona Venture Group, and first round participants Timberline Ventures and Venture Partners, etrieve's second-round financing was completed at $13 million.

Industry statistics demonstrate that while e-mail has grown to be the primary business communications tool, with more than 300 million messages sent daily, the number of mobile professionals is also increasing with 37 million Americans spending at least 20 percent of work life on the road. This trend leads to a real need for a practical solution for professionals to interact with their office e-mail when away from their desktops.

etrieve offers a practical solution to extend office e-mail to the mobile environment. etrieve allows users to prioritize e-mail based on their preferences; pages users when high priority messages come in; and delivers that information by their choice of voice, Web, or fax. And, all on-the-road activity is synchronized with the user's desktop inbox.

"etrieve should be the only e-mail system a mobile user requires when on the road," said Elliott Hamilton, senior vice president and director of the Global Wireless Group at The Strategis Group. "No more multiple devices to handle e-mail versus mobile voice calls. etrieve's most impressive features are the ability to handle attachments over your mobile phone, as well as the ability to respond via voice back to the user of a text based e-mail."

The roll-out of etrieve M3, follows extensive beta testing in which 95 percent of customers reported that they would recommend the etrieve service to a colleague. As Carter Alexander, president of The EMS Group and etrieve beta tester, stated, "etrieve leverages my existing tool kit. I don't need a new e-mail system, or wireless device or even need to read a manual. In minutes, I was accessing e-mail with my mobile phone."

The partnership between Ignition Corporation and etrieve illustrates Ignition's mission to bring meaningful wireless Internet solutions to the marketplace and how its investment model is playing a substantive role in successfully mentoring start up companies.

"etrieve's promise to provide practical solutions for e-mail on the move clearly supports Ignition's mission to make the wireless Internet an integral part of people's daily lives," stated Brad Silverberg, CEO and chairman of Ignition Corporation. "It's only fitting that our first publicly announced partner company focuses on leveraging the converging Internet and wireless worlds to make today's most critical communications tool even more powerful."

VC 2.0 -- Ignition "Engagement Model" Transcends Traditional Funding

The Ignition team offers more than 150 years experience in the Internet, software and wireless markets and distinguishes itself with its Engagement Model - which helps clients navigate through a defined business, partnering, marketing, and development planning process, with access to the resources and expertise needed for long-term success.

"Among a variety of funding options, we turned to Ignition for its distinctive approach," stated Mike Maerz, CEO and chairman of etrieve. "We gain not only an infusion of capital to help fuel the company's growth, but more importantly, a team of seasoned advisors with a combination of strong operating skills and strategic connections that span the wireless services and Internet software industries. Ignition executives serve as an extension of etrieve's management team."

etrieve M3 Availability and Pricing

etrieve M3 is available at www.etrieve.com, where users can sign up for a free 30-day trial and begin using the service in less than 15 minutes. The service works with any phone and is available today for users of Microsoft Exchange/Outlook e-mail or with POP3-accessible accounts such as MindSpring, Yahoo!, CompuServe and others. Support for Lotus Notes will be available in the summer. The service is priced starting at $19.95 per month and ranges to $49.95 for unlimited toll-free access.

iD2 Technologies joins EU backed project to ensure interoperability of e-signature products and services across Europe.

M2 PRESSWIRE-16 February 2000-ID2 TECHNOLOGIES: iD2 Technologies joins EU backed project to ensure interoperability of e-signature products and services across Europe (C)1994-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

RDATE:16022000

* Electronic Signature Test-suit for Interoperability (ESTIO) to develop tools for e-signature compatibility testing

A consortium of European organisations and academics, including iD2 Technologies, a leading developer of PKI (public key infrastructure) solutions that help identify users across open networks such as the Internet, has launched an EU backed project to investigate the interoperability of e-signature products and services used within European PKIs.

ESTIO, a 12 month project, aims to specify and build a set of tools that will make developers looking to offer e-signature technology aware of potential compatibility problems that may arise when their products or services are used alongside those of other manufacturers. The tools will also allow the products to be tested for compatibility with Certification Authorities (CA).

"Digital identification technologies are being integrated into a number of next- generation devices, including wireless technologies like mobile phones and PDAs, all designed to allow users to conduct remote, mobile e-business," explains Simon Corell, PKI Evangelist, Product Marketing at iD2 Technologies.

"What this means is that there is a growing number of technologies, standards, policies and storage devices all being developed with little consideration for interoperability. By ensuring all of these emerging technologies are compatible with each other we can create a huge opportunity for both next generation devices and services.

"iD2 is already closely involved with a number of standardisation activities. ESTIO aims to ensure that a complete set of tools is in place for future developers to use. This will enable them to ensure that their services are recognised and compatible on an international level. We also hope that the European Commission and other standardisation bodies will select the consortium's methodologies, services and tools," finishes Corell.

ESTIO will focus on advanced electronic signature generation and verification services and the tools used to guarantee the quality of the issued signature.

Its tools will be flexible enough to support the verification of both ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) and IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) formats.

The consortium comprises Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC), Baltimore Technologies, Forschungszentrum Informationstechnik, Laboratori General d'Assaigs I Investigacions (LGAI), SECUDE, Safelayer Secure Communications and iD2 Technologies.
